The Capsule and Catheter

The vegan capsule encases the deflated balloon and is attached to a thin tube (catheter) that is used to transmit the distilled water into the balloon. This catheter is radio-opaque, meaning it is clearly visible on x-ray for the doctor to identify the location of the attached capsule before the filling of the balloon commences.

After the filling has been completed, and one more x-ray to confirm the positioning of the balloon, the doctor gently pulls on the catheter which detaches from the balloon and removes the catheter.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Allurion gastric balloon is a weight loss device that is designed to be temporary and is not meant to stay in the body permanently. The balloon is intended to stay in the stomach for roughly 16 weeks, or four months, after which it naturally deflates (releases the fluid on its own) and passes out. While it is in the stomach the balloon creates a sense of fullness which reduces the tendency to snack. Besides this food stays longer in the stomach and reduces the need for grazing.
The Allurion balloon features a self-release mechanism that allows it to expel all the fluid after 16-weeks. Because of this, there is no need for an endoscopy.

After your nausea and upper tummy discomfort have settled in a few days, you can resume gentle exercise. This can be gradually increased to resistance training under the supervision of your personal trainer and medical team.

The Allurion gastric balloon is made to reduce cravings for food and make people feel fuller faster, which can make it simpler to follow a healthy diet and lose weight. The balloon occupies about 550 ml of stomach space, which can make people feel satisfied after fewer, smaller meals.

It’s vital to remember that each person will experience the balloon’s ability to suppress hunger differently. While some people may feel significantly less hungry, others can still have occasional cravings or hunger sensations.

Throughout the initial days following balloon placement, it’s also typical to feel some discomfort or nausea, which can make it challenging to consume certain foods.

In order to manage hunger and optimise weight reduction, it’s crucial to engage with a healthcare professional and/or a certified dietitian to create a personalised meal plan that takes into consideration dietary requirements and individual preferences. Drinking plenty of water and eating small, frequent meals throughout the day might also aid in easing discomfort and hunger.

The Allurion gastric balloon is a very safe procedure however, every procedure entails some risks. Luckily, the risks of these adverse effects have greatly decreased with the current form of the balloon. The following are some potential hazards and negative consequences related to using the Allurion gastric balloon:

  1. Nausea and vomiting are common side effects in the initial days following balloon placement. These symptoms can be controlled with medication and dietary modifications. It might result in dehydration if it is not appropriately treated.
  2. Abdominal pain and discomfort: Due to the balloon in the stomach, some people may experience bloating, abdominal pain, or both.
  3. Balloon rupture or deflation: Although unlikely, there is a chance that the balloon could burst or deflate, which could lead to problems like blockages or intestinal perforations.
  4. Oesophageal or stomach discomfort: The presence of the balloon in the stomach can cause irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining or oesophagus.
  5. Bowel Blockage: This is something that can seldom happen when the balloon is passing out. It is more likely if one has previously undergone abdominal surgery.

It is crucial to carefully examine whether the Allurion gastric balloon surgery is the best option for your unique circumstances and medical history after going through the potential risks and benefits with a healthcare professional.

Sleeping on your left side is typically advised after receiving the Allurion gastric balloon. By doing this, the balloon will be less likely to move and may cause discomfort or intolerance.
The balloon may move and exert pressure on the stomach if you sleep on your right side, which could potentially be uncomfortable. You might feel heavy when lying on your back, which can be bothersome.
In the first few days following balloon implantation, if you have been feeling uneasy, taking a little walk can usually make you feel better.
To ensure a safe and complete recovery, it’s crucial to adhere to your healthcare provider’s post-procedure care instructions, which may include specific sleeping positions, dietary restrictions, and activity limitations. Moreover, you should call your healthcare professional right away if you develop any unexpected symptoms or discomfort, such as severe abdominal pain or vomiting.

The Allurion balloon is generally considered safe, but like any medical device, it does carry some risks. The most common risks associated with the Allurion balloon include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort, which typically occur during the first few days after placement and subside as the body adjusts to the balloon.

Less common risks associated with the Allurion balloon include balloon deflation or leakage, which can cause the balloon to pass through the digestive system and be excreted in the stool. In rare cases, the balloon may cause a blockage in the digestive system, which may require medical intervention.

It is important to note that the Allurion balloon is intended for use only in adults who are overweight or obese, with a BMI of 27-40, and who have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. Individuals who have had previous digestive tract surgery, certain medical conditions, or are pregnant should not use the Allurion balloon.

As with any medical procedure, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if the Allurion balloon is the right weight loss option for you, and to discuss any potential risks or complications that may be associated with the procedure.

The Allurion gastric balloon is designed to take up space in the stomach, which can help individuals feel fuller and reduce their appetite. However, it is still possible to feel hungry with a gastric balloon, especially during the initial period after placement when the body is adjusting to the presence of the balloon.

It is important to note that the Allurion balloon is intended to be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan that includes healthy eating and exercise habits. By following a nutritionally balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise, individuals may be able to manage hunger and maximize the effectiveness of the balloon in achieving weight loss goals.

It is also important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if the Allurion balloon is the right weight loss option for you, and to discuss any concerns or questions you may have about the procedure.

While the gastric balloon is considered a relatively safe weight loss option, it does carry some risks, as with any medical procedure. Some of the risks associated with Allurion gastric balloon placement include:

  1. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort: These are common side effects that typically occur in the first few days after balloon placement and subside as the body adjusts to the balloon
  2. Gastrointestinal obstruction: In rare cases, the balloon can cause a blockage in the digestive system, which may require medical intervention.
  3. Balloon deflation or leakage: If the balloon leaks or deflates, it can pass through the digestive system earlier than expected.
  4. Ulceration or erosion: In rare cases, the balloon can cause irritation or damage to the stomach lining, leading to ulcers or erosion.
  5. Allergic reaction: In rare cases, individuals may have an allergic reaction to the balloon material.

It is important to note that the risks associated with gastric balloon placement are relatively rare, and the procedure is generally considered safe for use in overweight and obese adults who have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if the gastric balloon is the right weight loss option for you, and to discuss any potential risks or complications that may be associated with the procedure.

Yes, you can walk after the Allurion gastric balloon placement. Walking and light exercise are usually encouraged after the procedure to help promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. However, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise or activities that may cause discomfort or strain on the abdomen for the first few days after placement.

It is also important to follow the post-procedure instructions provided by your healthcare provider, which may include dietary restrictions, medication management, and activity recommendations. Your healthcare provider will provide specific guidance on when you can resume normal activities, including exercise.

It is important to note that the Allurion balloon is intended to be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan that includes healthy eating and exercise habits. Walking and other forms of regular physical activity can be an important component of this plan and may help to maximize the effectiveness of the balloon in achieving weight loss goals.

The Allurion gastric balloon is designed to remain in the stomach for 16 weeks, after which time it is naturally expelled from the body through the digestive system.

It is important to note that while the gastric balloon can be an effective tool for short-term weight loss, it is not a permanent solution. To maintain weight loss, individuals should continue to follow a healthy diet and exercise plan after the balloon is removed and work with their healthcare provider to develop a long-term weight management strategy.
